UCI Science WebQuests from all years

Suggested Grade Level: 5 to 8

Science Content Standards:

Physical Science
Grade 5-1a During chemical reactions, the atoms in the reactants rearrange to form products with different properties.
Grade 5-1b All matter is made of atoms, which may combine to form molecules.
Grade 8-5c Chemical reactions usually liberate heat or absorb heat.

Investigation and Experimentation
Grade 5-6c Plan and conduct a simple investigation based on a student-developed question, and write instructions others can follow to carry out the procedures.
Grade 5-6f Select appropriate tools (e.g., thermometers, meter sticks, balances, and graduated cylinders) and make quantitative observations.
Grade 5-6g Record data using appropriate graphic representation (including charts, graphs, and labeled diagrams), and make inferences based on those data.
Grade 5-6h Draw conclusions based on scientific evidence and indicate whether further information is needed to support a specific conclusion.
Grade 5-6i Write a report of an investigation that includes tests conducted, data collected or evidence examined, and conclusions drawn.

Note to Teachers:
Activity 1 is a lab activity.
Students choose one of the experiments provided at Wondernet to complete.
Activities change on a monthly basis.
You will need to collect different materials based on the monthly experiments provided.

Background:
Students need a basic background in internet usage, lab procedures, cooperative team work
(timekeeper, supplies, clean-up) and a basic understanding of matter, atoms, mixtures and chemical reactions.

Skills:
Interpreting data, making inferences, forming hypotheses, making predictions, graphing.
Computer literacy.
Effective use of Internet resources.

Assessment:
Lab.
Quiz.

Enrichment:
Periodic Table Adventure
Puzzlemaker- students create puzzles using vocabulary from the chemical reactions webquest.
